The African cichlids contain some of the most colorful of all freshwater fishes. The cichlids are an enormous family of fish and they offer the widest variety of body shapes and behaviors of all freshwater fishes.
This wonderful group is further complimented by their remarkable behavior, it is highly complex yet ritualistic. They are very active and many can be very personable, readily greeting their keepers and begging for food. These are the characteristics that make cichlids a favorite attraction for many hobbyists.
The African Cichlids seen in the hobby have a mix of fascinating characteristics and are a delight to keep. There are many colorful cichlids like the popular varieties of Peacock Cichlids. Others are highly prized for their unique habitat or behavioral characteristics. These can be seen in the goby cichlids, shelldwellers, featherfins, and popular Tropheus genus, to name a few.
Most of the favorite fish are moderate in size and very well suited to home aquariums. Some also reach an impressive size and are great specimens for a large show tank. Only a few are not really suitable for the home aquarium due to size.
*We keep our cichlids in a 500 gallon Tub and we generally scoop them out from an overhead view, so we are not able to get specific types.

South American cichlids are attractive, active, are generally quite durable fish. They are found in a range of sizes and with some very beautiful coloration.
Their behaviors are very intriguing, and many interact with their keepers and their environment making them favorite aquarium fish for many hobbyists.
Cichlids are found around the globe, in the Americas, Africa and parts of Asia. The “type specimen” for the cichlid family is the South American cichlid Cichla ocellaris, commonly known as the Peacock Bass or Peacock Cichlid. Thus the American cichlids are sometimes referred to as the “true cichlids” though all species are actually true cichlids.
The South American Cichlids or New World Cichlids are those found primarily in Central and South America, with a number of species native to Mexico, and the Texas Cichlid found in the southern part of North America. The actual number of cichlid species is unknown but estimated at more than 2000, with at least 1300 species scientifically described. South American Cichlids and Central American Cichlids are estimated at about 570 species.
They are categorized as "secondary freshwater fish" - meaning their ancestors were marine fish. It is believed that cichlids moved to freshwaters from the marine environment, and they have features relating to a number of marine species including the damsels, wrasses, parrot fish, and surfperches. This helps to explain why many species can do well in salty water, and in fact some species extend their range into parts of the ocean.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I'm John I just want to know if you have any female red tiger Montaguense cichlids.

Hello John,  At the moment we do not have any instock.  We can send you our full list.  Please email us at Support@YourFishStore.com

  • Hi I have a 75 gallon tank can this fishes be together

Hello,  These fish would need to be split up for multiple tanks.  People who order this package usually split them up for multiple tanks.  Or do a Friend group order where a couple of people may split the fish in this package.

  • Can all 50 of these fish be put in the same tank. I have a 180 gallon tank.

Hello,  You can but we would recommend splitting between multiple tanks.  The south american cichlids may pick on the African cichlids.  People who purchase this package usually have multiple tank set ups to divide them in.
